Jerusalem:The Israeli Prime Minister has praised the United States for an attack that killed Iran's top general saying US President Donald Trump should be congratulated for acting swiftly, boldly and resolutely against this terrorist in chief.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praising US President Trump for taking the bold step to end terrorism in the Middle East, on Wednesday.

Speaking at an event in Jerusalem on Wednesday, Benjamin Netanyahu said General Qassem Soleimani had been the architect and driver of Iran's campaign of carnage and terror throughout the Middle East and the world.

Netanyahu said Israel stood beside and behind the United States, adding America has no better friend than Israel and Israel has no better friend than the United States of America.

The killing of Soleimani - a national hero to many in Iran - came as tensions have been rising steadily across the Mideast after Trump's decision to unilaterally withdraw America from Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers.

It raised the chances of open conflict erupting between the two enemies who have been at odds since Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution and the subsequent US Embassy takeover and hostage crisis.

The US Embassy in Israel on Monday issued a warning to Americans to stay on the alert in the event of mortar or rocket fire.

Israel, a key US ally and longtime foe to Iran, has kept a low profile since Soleimani's killing.

A former Iranian Revolutionary Guard leader then suggested the Israeli city of Haifa and others could be targeted should the US attack Iran.

On Wednesday Iran struck back at the United States for killing the top Revolutionary Guard commander, firing a series of ballistic missiles at two military bases in Iraq that house American troops in a major escalation between the two longtime foes.
