Israeli fighter jets carried out several airstrikes in the northern and southern Gaza Strip early on Saturday, targeting what the Israeli military said were a Hamas compound and underground structures.

In a statement, the military said the raids were a response to the projectile and incendiary kites that were flown Friday across the border.

Heavy plant machinery could be seen clearing debris in Khan Younis in the south of Gaza on Saturday, but there were no reports of casualties.

Meanwhile in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, dozens of people attended the funeral of 23-year-old Tamer Arafat, a Palestinian killed by Israeli fire on Friday.

Arafat was shot at the weekly protest along the fence bordering the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

He was wounded in the head and died shortly after arriving at a local hospital, the Palestinian health ministry said.

The ministry added that 44 protesters were injured by live fire as well as two journalists and two medics.
