London:Dr Soumya Swaminathan, who is the chief scientist at the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Thursday, said that nearly 2 billion doses of the Covid-19 vaccine would be ready by the end of next year.
Addressing the media from Geneva, she said, "At the moment, we do not have a proven vaccine but if we are lucky, there will be one or two successful candidates before the end of this year and 2 billion doses by the end of next year."
Scientists still predict a safe and effective vaccine against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, could take at least 12-18 months to develop.
Last month, global pharmaceutical major Pfizer said that it believes that a vaccine to prevent Covid-19 could be ready by the end of October.
