Watch: Russia tests ballistic missiles in Barents Sea

The test came after President Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian military to respond to a new US missile test on Sunday that was previously banned under the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.

Moscow: Russia successfuly test-fired ballistic missiles from a submarine in seas north of Russia on Saturday, according to the Russian Ministry of Defence.

The submarine 'Yuri Dolgoruky' fired the 'Bulava' ballistic missiles in the Barents Sea and succesfully hit its target in the Kamchatka peninsula.

The test came after President Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian military to respond to a new US missile test on Sunday that was previously banned under the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.

In Sunday's test, the US fired a modified US Navy Tomahawk cruise missile and struck a target more than 500 kilometres (310 miles) away.

The US pulled out from the historic treaty earlier in August, claiming Russia had violated the treaty.

Russian President Vladimir Putin denies the allegation and accused the US of waging a 'propaganda campaign'.
