Stockholm:The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences will award the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics to Syukuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselmann and Giorgio Parisi “for groundbreaking contributions to the understanding of complex physical systems.”
According to an announcement made by the Nobel Prize, Manabe and Klaus have been jointly awarded one half of the 2021 #NobelPrize in Physics “for the physical modelling of Earth’s climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting global warming.”
Meanwhile, Parisi has been awarded one half of the prize “for the discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales.”
A statement by the Nobel Prize on Twitter said the prize for physics recognises new methods for describing complex systems and predicting their long-term behaviour. One complex system of vital importance to humankind is Earth’s climate.
