Social distancing: Nurse shares newborn's glimpse inside car

A 34-year old Portuguese nurse gave birth to a baby boy, she sat in a car waiting for her sister -- who was about to finish a 12-hour shift at an intensive care unit dealing with COVID-19 patients -- to show her the newborn. The sisters have not seen each other in person since early March when the new coronavirus began affecting the country.

Lisbon: A nurse who couldn't wait any longer to show her newborn baby to her sister, a fellow nurse, waited until her hospital shift was finished to introduce the child to his aunt through a car window because of the coronavirus.

Five days after the 34-year old nurse gave birth to a baby boy, she sat in a car waiting for her sister -- who was about to finish a 12-hour shift at an intensive care unit dealing with COVID-19 patients in a hospital in northern Portugal -- to show her the newborn.

Before approaching the car, the other sister put on a mask and fought to hold back her tears when she saw her nephew for the first time through the window.

The moment, captured on video, has been widely shared in Portugal.

The sisters have not seen each other in person since early March when the new coronavirus began affecting the country.

As of Wednesday, Portugal had 7,443 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 160 deaths.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
