Dine at London's Eggs and Bread Cafe, pay only if you wish to

There's no silver service, this cafe is all do-it-yourself, but there's a good reason for that. The goal is to keep costs to a minimum so people with little or no cash can eat good food in a warm and welcoming environment.

London:A simple London cafe has become famous despite its limited menu of boiled eggs, toast, jam, and porridge as well as tea and coffee. That's because customers can pay whatever they want or nothing and it's improving the local community spirit.

Boiled eggs make for a great start to the day. The only problem is getting the timing just right.

There's no silver service here, this cafe is all do-it-yourself, but there's a good reason for that.

The goal is to keep costs to a minimum so people with little or no cash can eat good food in a warm and welcoming environment.

Customers at London's Eggs and Bread may have to tackle how hard or soft the eggs will turn out, but they don't have the obstacle of the bill at the end of their breakfast.

Hungry clients can pay whatever amount they can afford to eat at the cafe - or nothing.

Eggs and Bread offers only boiled eggs, toast, muffins, jam, and porridge as well as tea, coffee, and orange juice.

As well as cooking their breakfast people are also expected to clean up after themselves.

According to customers, the cafe is already popular because it provides everyone with an inclusive and welcoming community atmosphere.

"It's here for everybody, and people from all walks of life come here, says customer Vicky Ashworth te Velde, a local Councillor.

"I like coming here because it's a nice place to work, it's a nice place to sit, meet people, chat, I have meetings here, I come for breakfast here, I come for coffee here. It's just a nice place to chill really."

The cafe is open in the mornings for 365 days of the year and has two members of staff or supervisors on shift every day.

The cafe does not use volunteers but pays its staff to ensure consistency in its service. It does not take donations and does not want to be seen as a charity.

It was opened in September 2018 and is currently funded by the owner Guy Wilson who works in insurance.

"It just came down to the fact that I know that this is costing me a few pennies but if I had to go out and get that it's going to cost me £7-8 minimum really to get," says Wilson.

"And it really shouldn't be that complicated. So it was really to take the complexity out of things. So we just wanted a really simple place where anybody could turn up and have a decent start to the day."

Wilson wants the cafe to be self-supporting through evening activities, such as chilly nights, selling hand-made pasta and having pop-ups.

He wanted to provide a bridge for people to connect in an area that he felt had become divided by class and wealth.

Wilson also believes it's important that the cafe can offer its customers security and permanence.

"When people start to know other people around them without sounding too cheesy, they realize they are not that different, and there are fewer differentials about people than they realize, whether they have a different financial background, a different educational background. Most people, 80 percent, will have something in common with each other," Wilson says.

"I hope they enjoy coming here. I think for some, they feel more involved in their community, some will feel less isolated, some will just come here for a break. But I'd like to think that people go away a bit happier than when they arrived, and that's enough," he says.

'Eggs and Bread' is also starting a new scheme called Hot Brew Crew which allows any company to help rough sleepers by giving them free coffee or tea.

Special Hot Brew Crew mugs are given to rough sleepers who can go into any cafe or food outlet displaying a Hot Brew Crew window sticker for a free beverage.

The aim is to distribute at least 2,000 mugs before Christmas.
