Rome:A rescue boat of Italian activists took on board 54 migrants from Mediterranean sea on Thursday who tried to reach Europe from Libya on a rubber dinghy.

Italian rescue group Mediterranea took the migrants on board their 20-meter (65 feet) ship named 'Alex & Co'. Among the rescued people were 11 women, of whom three were pregnant and four children.

According to the Mediterranea crew, the Italian Coast Guard central command asked the Libyan Coast Guard to intervene at the scene.

The rescue group decided to take the migrants on board as they don't recognise Libya as a safe port due to the ongoing conflict.

Italian Minister of Interior and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said on Facebook that he opposes the arrival of the rescue ship in Italy and suggested that they head toward Tunisia.

On the other hand, Mediterranea has suggested Lampedusa, as the closest safe port. Spanish NGO Open Arms is following Alex & Co and giving medical assistance.
