Violent protests rock Jakarta

Violent protests are continuing unabated in Jakarta over the Indonesian Presidential poll results declared on Tuesday. Supporters of defeated Presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto took to the streets and targeted the police. They threw stones and burned tyres.

Jakarta: Violent protests are continuing unabated in Jakarta over the Indonesian Presidential poll results declared on Tuesday. Supporters of defeated Presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto took to the streets and targeted the police. They threw stones and burned tyres.

The unrest started when protestors,who allege the poll results were biased in favour of Joko Widodo, attacked a police station Tuesday night. Police fired tear gas to disperse the violent mob. In the milieu six people died and nearly 200 were injured.

Widodo won for a second term. Known for his proximity to China from which Indonesia took loans and logistical supports for infrastructural projects, Widodo is severely criticised by anti-China and pro-Muslim conservatism Prabowo.
