Jakarta: A clash took place between the security forces and the suppoters of an unsuccessful presidential candidate in Indonesian capital after the release of election results.
Indonesian election results showed that Joko Widodo has defeated his rival Prabowo Subianto.
Protests started in a peaceful manner but after few hours it turned violence forcing police to fire tear gas at the protesters, reports say.
At least six people died and 200 were injured during the violence said the Governor of Jakarta.
Violent protests in Jakarta after poll results After the declaration of the election results supporters of Mr Prabowo gathered in front of the election supervisory building, but later the crowd was dispersed by the Jakarta police.
Speaking to media about the protests, Police spokesman Dedi Prasetyu said that more that 20 agitators were arrested. He futher said that police were not armed with real bullets.
More than 30,00 troops were deployed in Jakarta city in anticipation of potential violence.
