Uyghur man promises release of mother from China detention camp

A China-born man identified as Mirshad Ghalip has released a video promising to save his 58-year old mother detained at a camp in China's Xinjiang territory. However, he said he is not sure whether his mother is alive or not.

Hyderabad: Expressing resentment over his mother's detention at a camp in China's Xinjiang territory, a Uyghur man has posted a video promising to save his 58-year old mother.

In the video, the China-born man identified as Mirshad Ghalip said his mother Zumret Awut is one of the millions of Uyghur Muslims detained in the dystopian system of “re-education” in Xinjiang.

However, he said he is not sure whether his mother is alive or not.

Though China has been cornered by many nation for these detention centers, it describes these as vocational and education centres in Xinjiang which is attended voluntarily.

According to Chinese authorities, these vocational and education centres aim at combating separatism and religious radicalism.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, a body comprising 57 Muslim states, has been praising the People’s Republic of China's efforts in providing care to Uyghur Muslims which leaves no option for people like Ghalip and many to speak out for the freedom of their family members.

Uyghurs, the largest non-Han ethnic group in the region, are believed to make up the majority of residents in China's internment centres, Global Voices reported, adding that, many Uyghurs outside China have been reluctant to speak up about the suffering of their relatives in Xinjiang.
