Tsunami alert sounded after 6.8 quake jolts Japan

Japan authorities have issued tsunami alert after an earth quake measuring 6.8 magnitude hit the north-western part of the country on Tuesday. The north-western coast of the mainland is expected to witness 0.2 to 1 meter tsunami, Tokyo's meteorological agency has warned.

Tokyo: Japan authorities have issued tsunami alert after an earth quake measuring 6.8 magnitude hit the north-western part of the country on Tuesday.

The north-western coast of the mainland is expected to witness 0.2 to 1 meter tsunami, Tokyo's meteorological agency has warned.

No casualties were reported due to the quake. The tsunami advisory was for sounded for Yamagata and Niigata Prefectures and the Noto area of Ishikawa Prefecture.

Earthquakes are common in Japan.

In 2011, the nation of 130 million people were affected after a magnitude 9.0 earthquake that struck in the Pacific Ocean.
