Toxic yellow gas seen at China chemical plant

The blast at Tianjiayi Chemical plant in Yancheng released toxic yellow gas which could be seen rising from the flames on Friday. The death toll in the explosion at the plant in eastern China has risen to 47, with another 90 people seriously injured.

Yancheng: Toxic yellow gas could be seen rising from the flames on Friday at the Tianjiayi Chemical plant in the city of Yancheng.

Thursday's blast there is China's worst industrial accident in years, with nearly 1,000 area residents moved to safety as of Friday as a precaution against leaks and additional explosions.

The death toll in the explosion at the plant in eastern China has risen to 47, with another 90 people seriously injured.

Firefighters and soldiers wore protective masks and suits to go into the chemical plant area, detecting air and water quality and searching and rescuing people trapped.

Windows in buildings as far as about 6 kilometres were blown out by the force of the blast.

China has long struggled with industrial safety. A 2015 explosion at a chemical warehouse in the city of Tianjin killed 173 people.
