The opaque future of Hong Kongers

Should Beijing takes full control of HK in 2047, the future of many Hong Kongers and their children will be one of grim.

Hyderabad: July 1, the day Hong Kong cannot forget. The 'July 1 Protest' is not new for Hong Kongers as hundreds of thousands of protesters across the region join the demonstration that marks the anniversary of Britain's handover of the autonomous territory and former colony to China.

This year, however, protests turned violent when millions hit the streets and vanadalised legislative council building, graffitied the walls, ransacked public property are drawing attention of the globe.

Hong Kong was a British colony after it was ceded to the UK after 1842 war. Later, the Britishers took the rest of the Hong Kong on lease for 99 years from China.

In 1980s, when the deadline for the lease approached, the two nations held discussions to chalk down the future of Hong Kong.

In 1984, the two nations sealed a deal that Hong Kong will be returned to China under "one country, two systems" principle through which Hong Kong will have its own legal systems, borders, freedom of assembly and speech.

Though the deal of "one country, two systems" offers many freedom to Hong Kong but the things are not going right.

Right group activists have accused China of interfering in Hong Kong matters. Moreover, they have also raised concern over the sudden disappearance of five booksellers and a tycoon who all are later found in Chinese custody.

Artists and writers in Hong Kong are under severe self-censor pressure and are not allowed to speak or write what they feel.

Moreover, not all the 70 lawmakers are directly chosen by Hong Kong voters.

Future Imperfect

If the proposed extradition law is passed, then it will be have severe impact on Hong Kong's freedom. It will also affect overseas businessmen including more than 85,000 Americans working there.

It will have an adverse impact on the economy of Hong Kong.

Under the Basic Law, Beijing will take full control of Hong Kong in 2047. With the deadline approaching, uncertainty loomed large over the future of the Hong Kongers and their children.
