Harsh lockdowns aimed at halting the march of the coronavirus has extended worldwide as the death toll inches closer to 1,00,000 and new waves of US outbreaks pushed the nation's containment efforts to the brink. Despite slivers of hope in Italy and Spain, the tough measures that have confined some two-fifths of the globe's population to their homes were broadened.

Hyderabad: The coronavirus pandemic has infected more than 16,04,718 and killed over 95,735 people across the world. More than 3,56,660 people have recovered so far.

New York state reported a record-breaking number of dead for a third straight day, 799. More than 7,000 people have died in the state, accounting for almost half the US death toll of more than 16,000.

New infections, hospitalizations and deaths have been leveling off in hard-hit Italy and Spain, which together have around 33,000 deaths, but the daily tolls are still shocking. Spain reported 683 more dead, bringing its total to more than 15,200. Britain recorded 881 new deaths, for close to 8,000 in all.

With 1,52,446 infections and 15,238 fatalities, Spain is alongside the United States and Italy as the hardest-hit countries by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Japan recorded more than 500 new cases for the first time, a worrisome rise since it has the world’s oldest population and COVID-19 can be especially serious in the elderly.
