Harsh lockdowns aimed at halting the march of the coronavirus has extended worldwide as the deaths surpassed 82,000 and new waves of US outbreaks pushed the nation's containment efforts to the brink. Despite slivers of hope in stricken Italy and Spain, the tough measures that have confined some two-fifths of the globe's population to their homes were broadened.

New York state reported 731 new COVID-19 deaths Tuesday, its biggest jump since the start of the outbreak, dampening some of the cautious optimism officials have expressed about efforts to stop the spread of the virus. The state’s death toll grew to 5,489. Across the US, the death toll reached about 11,000, with around 370,000 confirmed infections.

The alarming surge in deaths comes as new hospital admissions have dropped on average over several days, a possible harbinger of the outbreak finally leveling off. Cuomo said the death tally is a “lagging indicator” that reflects the loss of critically ill people hospitalized earlier.

Italy has reported 3,039 new cases in a 24-hour period. The country hasn’t seen such a low daily number since the early weeks of the outbreak. In total, Italy has 1,35,586 confirmed cases and 16,523 deaths from the COVID-19 outbreak.

One of the best ways to prevent the spread of the virus is by washing your hands with soap and water. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends first washing with warm or cold water and then lathering soap for 20 seconds to get it on the backs of hands, between fingers and under fingernails before rinsing off.
