Fact Check: Viral videos show Indonesia eruption 'fake'

The videos those went viral on social media claiming to be of Indonesia volcanic eruption are fake. ETV Bharat went on to check the authenticity of the footage and found out them to be fake.

Hyderabad: Days after an eruption of Mt Sinabung in the Indonesian island of Sumatra has left the locals in a state of panic, videos going viral on social media claim the same volcanic eruption has doubled the trouble of the netizens.

After the videos started doing rounds on social media, ETV Bharat went on to check the authenticity of the footage and found out them to be fake.

The viral video which shows a series of underwater explosions resulting in huge plume of thick ash followed by a tsunami is an animated video.

The animated video was made by a geologist showing underwater volcanic eruption just off New Zealand coast.

On 9 June, a volcano erupted in Sumatra, thrusting a column of volcanic ash some seven kilometres into the air.

Amateur video showed a huge plume of smoke and ash spiralling high over one of the villages in the vicinity of the mountain.

Mt Sinabung is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, and officials are warning there could be further eruptions to come.
