China to impose US visa restrictions over Hong Kong

The Senate bill targets police units that have cracked down on Hong Kong protesters, as well as Chinese Communist Party officials responsible for imposing the national security law for Hong Kong.

Beijing: China on Monday announced it would impose visa restrictions on US individuals deemed to be interfering in Hong Kong-related affairs, days after the US Senate passed a bill imposing sanctions on businesses and individuals that undermine Hong Kong's autonomy.

The Senate bill targets police units that have cracked down on Hong Kong protesters, as well as Chinese Communist Party officials responsible for imposing the national security law for Hong Kong.

China's foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said on Monday the bill violated the basic norms of international law and international relations.

He insisted that no external interference would stop the implementation of the national security legislation, which critics say would severely compromise human rights in Hong Kong.
