New Delhi: Amid the fast-evolving deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan, China and the Afghan Taliban leaders held their first diplomatic talks, confirmed the Chinese foreign ministry On Wednesday.
Addressing a media briefing, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said, "China and the Afghan Taliban have smooth and effective communication and consultation. Kabul is naturally an important platform and channel for the two sides to discuss various important matters".
Ever since the US announced the withdrawal of troops from the war-ravaged nation, the international community saw the Taliban gaining ground rapidly in Afghanistan, leaving the civilians of the country in complete distress.
The Taliban seized power in Afghanistan on August 15, two weeks before the US was set to complete its troop withdrawal after a costly two-decade war.
The Chinese spokesperson further stressed that China's policy toward Afghanistan is consistent and clear. "We always respect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Afghanistan, follow the principle of non-interference in Afghanistan's internal affairs and adhere to the friendly policy for all the Afghan people", he added.
China respects the Afghan people's independent choice of their future, supports the implementation of the "Afghan-led and Afghan-owned" principle, and stands ready to continue to develop good-neighbourliness, friendship and cooperation with Afghanistan and play a constructive role in Afghanistan's peace and reconstruction", he reiterated.
