In their letter, they have mentioned about the challenges which pulse crop farmers of their constituencies are facing due to India's retaliatory tariffs imposed after United States administration took GSP status away from India.

They designated Indian imposed tariffs as unfair and claimed that it has affected their pulse producers. Senators also mentioned that due to this their pulse producers face significant competitive disadvantage while exporting to India.

India is world's biggest producer and consumer of pulses, contributing nearly 27% of world consumption which stands close 240 lakh tonnes. Both Montana and North Dakota are the largest producers of pulses in the United States.

Both senators have urged President Trump to hold discussions with Prime Minister Modi in this regard.

President Trump had already created a storm by claiming that India never treated U.S. well. He was answering to a media query on trade.
