UN chief condemns attack in Saudi Arabia

The pre-dawn strikes hit a Saudi oil field and the world's largest crude oil processing plant on Saturday, disrupting the kingdom's oil production. Though Yemen's Houthi rebels claimed the assault, the US alleges Iran was behind it.

New York:UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned Saturday's attack in Saudi Arabia, calling it "a dramatic escalation in the Gulf" that must be halted.

The pre-dawn strikes hit a Saudi oil field and the world's largest crude oil processing plant on Saturday, disrupting the kingdom's oil production. Though Yemen's Houthi rebels claimed the assault, the US alleges Iran was behind it.

Speaking at a United Nations press briefing ahead of the U.N. General Assembly, Guterres told reporters that experts were sent under the UN Security Council resolution that endorsed the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and major powers.

Guterres also laid out the agenda for the gathering saying climate change is the main focus saying the world is "of track in meeting the sustainable development goals."

In response to a question on the Trump administration's announcement that it is revoking California's authority to set auto mileage standards stricter than those issued by federal regulators, Guterres said it is contrary to a decentralized approach to combating clime change.
