Port-au-Prince:Thousands of Haitians protested on Friday demanding the resignation of Haitian President Jovenel Moise over corruption charges. Schools, businesses and government offices across the country were shut and a parliament session was suspended.

Keber Bastien, an artist, said, "I am in the streets against the corrupt system that produces misery in the country. This system steals more than 4 billion (US) dollars that cannot be stolen by one person or one sector. But it was stolen with the complicity of many sectors."

Demonstrators are demanding further investigation into the fate of funds that resulted from subsidised oil shipments from Venezuela under the Petrocaribe programme.

Power generation problems are raising in the country due to Venezuela's poor economy as Petrocaribe shipments have been curtailed. Many Haitians now receive electricity only for a few hours a day.

A Senate investigation stated that at least 14 former government officials allegedly misused 3.8 billion US dollars under the administration of former president Michel Martelly.

A week earlier during protest one person had died in a gunfire.
