Meet Saybie, world's tiniest surviving baby

A San Diego hospital on Wednesday revealed the birth of a girl believed to be the world's smallest surviving baby, who weighed just 245 grams before she was discharged as a healthy infant. The girl named as Saybie is the world's tiniest baby ever to survive.

San Diego: A hospital in San Diego city in the state of California has revealed the birth of a baby girl, who is believed to be the world's tiniest surviving baby.

The baby named Saybie weighed only 245 grams when she was born, has been discharged from the hospital this month and said to be healthy.

According to hospital sources, the baby was born at 23 weeks and three days and was sent home this month. She weighed 2 kilograms when she was discharged from the hospital.

Post-delivery, Saybie was kept under observation for nearly five months in the neonatal intensive care unit at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns.

The baby's mother gave permission to share the story but wanted to stay anonymous, the hospital said.

According to the Tiniest Baby Registry maintained by the University of Iowa, Seybie is the world's tiniest baby ever to survive.

Narrating the whole incident, the mother of the baby said, "the day when Saybie was born is the scariest day of my life."

"I was told I have preeclampsia and very high blood pressure so the baby need to be delivered quickly," she said, adding that, "I never thought Saybie will survive as she was only 23 weeks old."

Babies typically are born at 40 weeks.
