Large fire destroys 200 homes in Peru

Callao: A large fire broke out on Thursday in the Peruvian city of Callao destroyed some 200 homes, firefighters and local media reported. No serious injuries or deaths have been reported.

According to local media, the fire started in the San Juan Bosco neighbourhood around 4:00 a.m. and quickly spread because of high winds and flammable material in the area.

Vice Commander of Peru firefighters Larry Lynch said, "The official report is that between 150 and 200 homes have been burned. All the rustic material, wood, cardboard make it difficult (to put the fire out) because of the issue of water (shortage)."

Firefighters were still working to put out the fire and prevent it from spreading.
