India's successful 'OPERATION AZHAR'

The UN Security Council has designated Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist. His terror group had, in the past, claimed responsibility for many terror attacks.

New Delhi: Terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed's chief Masood Azhar on Wednesday was designated as a global terrorist by the UN Security Council. His terror outfit, founded in 2000, had claimed responsibility for many terror attacks in India, including the suicide attack which targetted the Indian security forces in Pulwama on February 14 in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed.

Following is the chronology of the major events leading to his designation as 'global terrorist':

• 2009:China blocks India's move in designating Azhar as a global terrorist
• 2016: India with support of UK, US and France moves to ban Azhar
• 2017:China blocks the proposal which was put forward by P3 nations

In 2019:

• February: US, UK and France together come up with a fresh proposal to blacklist Azhar
• March: China puts the hold on the proposal.
• March 28: The US, supported by France and the UK, directly moves a draft resolution in the UN Security Council to blacklist Azhar
• April 3: China hits out at the US. China says Washington's move is complicating the issue and not conducive to peace and stability in South Asia.
• May: The 1267 Sanctions Committee designates Azhar as a global terrorist after China lifts the hold on the proposal of the US, the UK and France.
