Buenos Aires: Hundreds of women demonstrated outside Argentina's National Congress on Tuesday, demanding the legalisation of elective abortion.

Demonstrators chanted slogans and waved green handkerchiefs, the symbol of the campaign to legalize abortion.

In 2018 the Argentine Senate rejected a bill to legalise abortion that had gone through the lower house of Congress.

The issue has sparked a nationwide debate.

Activists say they are now working on putting the subject back onto the political agenda ahead of presidential elections scheduled for October.

"Candidates will have to disclose if they are in favor of us women deciding freely or if they are in favour of clandestine abortion," said Mercedes Trimarchi, a lawmaker from Argentina's Left Front party.

Currently abortion in Argentina is only allowed in cases of rape or if it poses a risk to a woman's health.

Thousands of women are hospitalized each year for complications linked to unsafe abortions, and it is the leading cause of maternal death.
