Baytown: At least 11 Greenpeace protesters were dangling from the Fred Hartman Bridge in Baytown, Texas, near Houston, just ahead of the third 2020 Democratic debate being held in Houston on Thursday evening.

On its website, Greenpeace said that its efforts are to stand up against the oil industry 'in the heartland of fossil fuels, Texas' and reported that the protesters intended to stay in place for 24 hours with the intention of preventing the transport of all oil and gas through the channel.

Greenpeace is a non-governmental environmental organisation with offices in over 39 countries and an international coordinating body in Amsterdam. It was founded in 1971.

The organisation states its goal is to 'ensure the ability of the Earth to nurture life in all its diversity' and focuses its campaigning on worldwide issues such as climate change, deforestation, overfishing, commercial whaling, genetic engineering, and anti-nuclear issues.
