Four of Sikh family killed in US, EAM dismisses 'hate crime' angle

An Indian visitor to the US and three others of Indian origin were shot dead in Cincinnati on Sunday evening. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj confirmed that the incident was not a "hate crime" as claimed by a section of the media.

Ohio: A vigil was held on Monday for four people found dead in an apartment complex in West Chester in the US state of Ohio.

Police said the bodies of the three women and one man were discovered by a relative on Sunday.

The deceased included an Indian national and three others of Indian origin. The authorities listed the dead as - Shalinderjit Kaur (39), Amarjit Kaur (58), Parmjit Kaur (62) and Hakiakat Singh Pannag (59).

Police added the man who discovered the bodies lived at the apartment with the victims.

Police said multiple gunshots had been fired but added it did not appear to be a murder-suicide.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted that she was aware of the crime and did not believe it to be a hate crime.

The Indian consulate in New York also assured that they were in contact with the police as well as the family of the deceased, and reiterated that prima facie, the incident is not a hate crime.

West Chester Township Police Chief Joel Herzog had said at a media briefing that the killer is on the run, and assured that the police is "closely following" the matter.
