Evidence of Trump misconduct 'overwhelming': Report

Washington:The evidence for impeaching President Donald Trump for misconduct in office and obstruction is "overwhelming," the final report on the House investigation into the US leader said Tuesday.

"The evidence of the President's misconduct is overwhelming, and so too is the evidence of his obstruction of Congress," said the report, meant to support formal charges against Trump.

"The impeachment inquiry has found that President Trump, personally and acting through agents within and outside of the US government, solicited the interference of a foreign government, Ukraine, to benefit his reelection."

The House of Representatives has released a sweeping impeachment report outlining evidence of what it calls President Donald Trump's wrongdoing toward Ukraine.

According to the media reports, the findings will serve as the "blueprint for House Democrats as they go about conducting their impeachment inquiry," and will lay the foundation for debate over whether the 45th president should be removed from office.

Tucker says among the "most significant" elements to the report's release "is to see the way the accusations are laid out in unsparing and vivid and evocative detail."

The report describes "how no other president, even ones who have been subjected to impeachment inquiries in the past, have responded to House demands for documents and testimony the way this president has."

Still, the report does not render a judgment on whether Trump's actions stemming from a July 25 phone call with Ukraine president rise to the level of "high crimes and misdemeanors" warranting impeachment, leaving that to Congress to decide.

Tucker says Republicans, who have up until now remained staunchly behind the president, will continue to tow familiar lines.

"If you're a Republican and you support the president, you're going to try to exploit any sort of opening and suggest that we're not learning anything new from this document that we didn't already know," he said.

The House intelligence panel will vote later Tuesday, in what is expected to be a party-line tally, to send the document to the Judiciary Committee ahead of a landmark impeachment hearing Wednesday.
