Sudanese demand faster transition of power

A week after Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir was ousted by the military, tens of thousands of protesters converged in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum to pressure the ruling military council to speed up the transition of power to a civilian government.

The protests come after the country's new rulers announced the arrests of former president Omar al-Bashir's two brothers on corruption charges.

Many professional associations including the Sudanese Association for Engineers and Lawyers organised marched to the main sit-in area in front of the Sudanese military headquarters.

"We see the fall of this regime is just in name only because the symbols of the regime have not been arrested yet," a protester said.

Earlier last week, the Sudanese military had ousted Omar al-Bashir after four months of street protests against his 30-year rule marred by conflict, civil war and corruption.

Deposed ex-Sudanese President wanted for genocide and crime against humanity by the International Criminal Court has been moved to Khartoum's high-security Kobar prison from the presidential residence.
