Nigerian police arrest protesters at Lekki shooting site

A judicial panel's decision to reopen the Lekki toll plaza triggered the anger among campaigners, who are questioning the Nigerian security forces for opening fire at a protest in last October.

Lagos (Nigeria): Nigerian police arrested scores of people on Saturday following protests at a Lagos toll gate where 12 people were killed last year.

At least 12 people were killed while protesting against police brutality, according to an Amnesty International report.

Peaceful campaigners returned to the site on Saturday but were promptly arrested.

Protester Anjorin Seye Joseph told reporters through the metal bars of a police truck that he was there only "in remembrance of those people that were killed last year."

Joseph also accused the government of "not doing anything" about last year's killings.

The #EndSARS protests began amid calls for Nigeria's government to close the police Special Anti-Robbery Squad, known as SARS, but became a much wider demand for better governance in Nigeria.
