The fighting by militias loyal to rival governments in Tripoli and in the country's east is threatening to trigger a civil war on the scale of the 2011 uprising that toppled and killed longtime Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

The United Nations has estimated that almost 20-thousand-people are displaced from the ongoing conflict.

"Where is the international community? Who led Libya to this point and let us down? Where is the United Nations? They're not even issuing a resolution to protect civilians," a distressed displaced resident told British broadcaster Sky recently.

The North African nation has been struggling to make a democratic transition since the fall of Gaddafi's regime in 2011.
