Mogadishu: At least 11 people were dead and 15 wounded on Monday in a car bomb explosion in Somalian capital Mogadishu.

The powerful explosion occurred in the morning when many people were going to work and others were traveling to attend the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia's Mecca.

A Somali police official said, "the car was parked near a busy security checkpoint by the city's airport."

Somalia's homegrown rebels, al-Shabab claimed the responsibility for the attack.Five of the security force members were killed in the attack.One of the most recent and deadly attacks by al-Shabaab took place on July 12 in Kismayo city where at least 26 people were killed, including a US citizen, a Briton and a Canadian, while 50 others were injured.
