Chhattisgarh: Nigerian national nabbed for duping people online

Raipur city police have arrested a Nigerian man for allegedly duping people after befriending them on a social networking site. The accused had created several fake Facebook profiles and had duped several people across the country.

Raipur: A Nigerian national has been arrested on Tuesday from New Delhi for allegedly duping people after befriending them on a social networking site. The incident came to light after a woman from Raipur lodged a complaint with the city police station recently.

According to police sources, the accused identified as Ignatius Chukavjequou Nauroka befriend people on Facebook and then convince them to transfer money on the pretext of sending them high-value gifts and foreign currency.

"He is one of the gang members who usually cheat people on the pretext of sending high-value gifts by creating fake social media profiles and befriended people by posing as women. The accused have duped several people on the pretext of releasing gifts," said Lakhan Patle, ASP, Raipur City Police.

"The accused was operating out of a rented apartment in Delhi and was found using social media for duping people. We have seized 4 mobile phones, 1 laptop, ATM cards, driving license, passport, pen drives and a pan card from the accused. He has been arrested from Delhi and brought to Raipur on transit remand. We will interrogate him for more information regarding his gang members and further action will be taken accordingly," ASP Patel said.

The police have booked the accused under section 417 cheating, Section 419 for impersonation, 420 for cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property under the Indian Penal Code and under sections of the IT Act.
