6.4 magnitude quake jolts Assam
Sonitpur (Assam): An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter Scale hit Sonitpur, Assam on Wednesday at around 7:51 AM, National Center for Seismology reports.
According to reports, tremors were felt in Bihar, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and other parts of the northeast.
There were no immediate reports of loss of lives or property.
"Just experienced a massive earthquake in Assam. Waiting for details," Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted.
There were six aftershocks following the major earthquake of 6.4 magnitude.
The tremors occurred 17 km beneath the ground and the epicentre of the quake was Sonitpur in northern Assam.
Most parts of the region felt the impact of the massive earthquake as people ran out of their homes and other places in panic. Many buildings in Tezpur, the district headquarters of Sonitpur, Guwahati, and other places developed cracks.
