2 more admitted to West Bengal hospital with coronavirus-like symptoms

Two more persons were on Tuesday admitted to an isolation ward in a state-run hospital here with fever and cough -- symptoms associated with the novel
coronavirus -- a senior health department official said.

Both have travel histories to coronavirus-hit countries -- Indonesia and Malaysia -- and were admitted to Beliaghata ID Hospital, he said.

Blood samples and throat swabs of the latest suspects have been collected and test reports are expected by evening, the official said.

He said three out of four other patients admitted at the isolation ward of the hospital tested negative for the novel coronavirus, while a re-examination would be conducted on the fourth patient, he said.

Another person, who had returned from Saudia Arabia on Saturday and admitted at the Beliaghata ID hospital on Sunday, "tested positive for swine flu".

"He has been kept under observation," he said.

Kerala Health minister K K Shailaja informed that two more people tested positive for coronavirus, taking the total infected cases in the state to 14 on Tuesday. 

"They are the parents of the a 3-year old child, who tested positive in Kochi on Monday on return of the family from Italy, Their condition is stable", the minister reporters here.

A 23-year-old woman and her 54-year-old mother were admitted in an isolation ward in the district civil hospital in Nashik in Maharashtra on Tuesday for suspected exposure to novel coronavirus, health officials said.

The woman had gone to Dubai on February 27 and returned to Nashik on March 3 and was quarantined after she complained of throat pain, cold and cough, while her mother was admitted as the two were together at home over the past one week, a doctor said.

Their samples have been sent for testing to National Institute of Virology in Pune and reports are expected by Wednesday, he added.

Sanjeeva Kumar, Special Secretary (Health), Union Health Ministry said, "The total number of positive cases are now 50. Of these 34 are Indian nationals and 16 are citizens of Italy. There has been no death in the country due to coronavirus so far."

Jaipur was put under high alert after a case of passenger with suspected coronavirus surfaced today.

The passenger was returning from Oman and was immediately admitted after the airport officials got suspicious post the medical screening.

  • "Driving tests and learner’s tests in the state have been restricted for one week. Bengaluru:The Karnataka government is mulling providing additional health insurance coverage to doctors and paramedics treating the COVID-19 cases and working in the laboratories besides existing schemes, Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar said on Tuesday.

Stressing that their safety was 'paramount', he also asked them to follow the guidelines laid down by the Health department while treating COVID-19 cases, the number of which has risen to four in the state.

Bengaluru: As many as three new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Karnataka, taking the total number of infected people to four, Health Minister B Sriramulu said here on Tuesday.

"So far four people have been confirmed for COVID-19. The patients as well as their family members have been quarantined..," Sriramulu said in a tweet.

Running a hashtag of #CoronaVirusOutBreak, the minister said, "I appeal to the people to make sure that this disease does not spread further."

Meanwhile, Chief Secretary T M Vijay Bhaskar convened a meeting with the health department officials to assess preparedness and ensure public safety.

Kerala on Tuesday confirmed six more cases of novel coronavirus, taking the total number of people affected by COVID-19 in the state to 12, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Announcing a high alert across the state, including a ban on all official public functions, Pinarayi after a special meeting of the state cabinet, told media persons that appeal will be put out to people to avoid all public gatherings.

Chief Minister said that the number of sample testing labs will also be increased.

Pathanamthitta: With 5 coronavirus cases being reported in Pathanamthitta district, a 2-year-old child was put in isolation ward here on Tuesday. The child had interacted with a coronavirus positive patient and hence preventive measures are being taken.

The disease was confirmed on 3 persons who have returned from Italy and 2 of their relatives.

The parents of the coronavirus patients too have been quarantined at the Kottayam Medical College isolation ward.

The Ranni native who was confirmed the novel coronavirus had mingled with many people after his visit from Italy and the health department officials have identified as many as 733 persons.

District collector P B Nooh said all the persons have been kept under medical surveillance. He also came down on the incident where a youth escaped from the isolation ward and fled, but was tracked and brought back within hours.

The man had been located and the persons he had interacted during his time out of the isolation will be identified and kept under observation.

In Ranni, the district administration issued extra alert and the migrant workers have been directed to exercise extra caution.

Thiruvananthapuram:The Cabinet which met here on Tuesday decided to cancel the annual exams till VII standard and not to hold any classes in the wake of the state coming under corona scare after 6 cases were confirmed in the last few days.

The direction is also applicable for anganwadis. However, there is no change in the exam schedule for 8th, 9th and 10th standards.

The cabinet also decided to exercise extreme caution and be alert till the end of this month.

A direction has been issued to stop all public functions in the state immediately in the wake of the coronavirus scare.
