Mumbai hospitals witness significant drop in new admissions; surgeries dip by 50%

Post lockdown, the number of patients examined at major hospitals in Mumbai city has dropped significantly. The surgical departments at these hospitals have also seen a drop of 50 per cent. The effect of COVID-19 lockdown has led to a drop in OPD cases as well. Patients who were already undergoing treatment in these hospitals before the lockdown were left with no choice but to stay back in the city.

Mumbai: The entire city of Mumbai has been hit by Coronavirus. As a result, the number of new admissions at major hospitals in the city have dropped significantly.

An average of 3500 patients was examined at Tata hospital daily, however, post lockdown, the number has dropped to 1700. In addition to this, the surgical department has also seen a drop of 50 per cent.

The lockdown was implemented in the country to check the spread of coronavirus. Various means of transport have also been suspended. A lot of prestigious medical institutions are based out of Mumbai and Tata Cancer Hospital is one of them. People from across the country come to the cancer speciality hospital in the city to avail treatment. There has been a major drop in the number of patients at Tata Hospital and KEM due to suspension of transport facilities. Patients who were already undergoing treatment in these hospitals before the lockdown were left with no choice but to stay back in the city.

The effect of COVID-19 lockdown has led to a drop in OPD cases as well.

During this period, teleconsultation has proven to be beneficial in a big way.

"The number of surgeries done declined by 50 per cent and radiation and chemotherapy also saw a drop of 30 - 40 per cent drop", informed Tata Hospital's medical officer, Dr Sarita Khobrekar.

Despite repeated attempts, the KEM administration was not available for comments.
