Covid patients face Remdesivir side effects in UP

According to doctors in Meerut, the incident was linked to a new batch of Remdesivir. The use of injections from the particular batch have been suspended.

Meerut (Uttar Pradesh): Several Covid patients who were administered the anti-viral drug Remdesivir in Uttar Pradesh reported adverse reactions such as nervousness and chills.

According to doctors in Meerut, the incident was linked to a new batch of Remdesivir. The use of injections from the particular batch have been suspended.

Remdesivir is a drug that is administered usually to critically ill Covid patients. A total of six doses are given to the patient. In this case, several patients from various hospitals in the city including Anand Hospital late on Friday night experienced adverse reactions.

Patients complained of chills, blurred vision, nervousness, shortness of breath and weakness. The health of some patients even deteriorated after they were administered Remdesivir.

Dr Akhilesh Mohan the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Meerut said the reaction was caused due to a new batch of the drug and all vials of the particular batch have been recalled. The government has also been informed, he added.

A special sampling of all injections is also being carried out and that special teams of doctors have been monitoring the patients at night, Dr Mohan said, adding that there is improvement in the condition of all patients.

On Friday, around 258 people who were given Remdesivir injections after having obtained permission from the administration, had reported facing adverse reactions.

At present, the distribution of Zydus Cadila-Remdesivir has been stopped and the injections of other companies are being distributed.
