Sweeper turns into nurse in Andhra Pradesh's govt hospital

A sweeper was seen giving injections to a critically wounded lady at a government hospital in Andhra Pradesh's Kurnool district, about 450 kilometres from the capital city, much to the embarrassment of health officials.

Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh):In a case of sheer medical ignorance, video of a sweeper giving treatment to a patient in the Panyam government hospital in Andhra Pradesh's Kurnool district has gone viral on social media after a local news channel covered the incident.

The sweeper, in a green saree, can be seen giving an injection to the patient. The incident was brought to light after the video that surfaced over the social network went viral.

When asked Dr Rahela of government hospital about the incident, she said, "I knew about the incident which has been going on since a senior doctor of the hospital went on leave."

When the reporter asked, If there is no staff, you could have asked for deputation? Then, the doctor replied negatively and said, "No one comes for a 1-2 day deputation. So, we have to manage the situation in the limited sources, the hospital has."

When asked if the sweeper is certified for prescribing medicines,Dr Rahela replied, "She is not certified for prescribing medicines, technically, but, also added that we have trained her to perform the basic stuff of medicine."

Despite the doctor being present at the spot, the class four employee at the hospital in question had also been involved in a similar case when she was filmed prescribing medicines, three months ago. Cases of such medical negligence are being increasingly reported day after day.

In February, a 2 cm needle was left inside a newborn baby in Mumbai at a Panvel nursing home. In another case, 29 newborns were reported to have died over three weeks in Madhya Pradesh.

In another case from MP and one other from Jammu & Kashmir, two women were denied treatment at a hospital due to the absence of medical staff.
