Kolhapur (Maharashtra): We have heard about the discovery of antiquities, tools, and coins during excavation. But it is uncommon that an ancient pond spread over one acre has been found in Wakare village in Karveer Taluka.
The historic construction came to light when excavation work was being carried out for setting up a solar power project. Before the discovery, this place had been a marshland. Some old antique items were also unearthed at the spot.
Wakare village in Karveer Taluka is just 14 km away from Kolhapur city. The solar power project is being set up by MP Sanjay Mandlik.

According to plans the swampy area of the village was chosen for the solar-powered project, and during excavation with the help of a JCB, steps made of purple rocks were discovered.
It was on a further excavation that the complete pond hidden beneath the marshland came to light.
The Archaeological Department which learned about the discovery issued instructions against the usage of JCB for digging at the site. Though 18,000 to 20,000 trolleys of sludge were removed so far, only 25 percent of the work has been completed yet.
