Ernakulam (Kerala): Aisha Sultana, an activist and actress has been charged with treason by the police after a complaint was registered against her by BJP Lakshadweep President C Abdul Khadar at the Kavaratti police station. In a media interview, Aisha had said that the central government is using Praful Patel as a bio-weapon against Lakshadweep in the same way that China had used the Coronavirus against other countries. Aisha clarified that she was referring to Patel and not the country or the government, adding that the virus had spread through Patel and his accomplices in Lakshadweep, where not a single Covid case had been reported for a year, and that it was in this context that he was compared to a bio-weapon.
The Lakshadweep Literary Working Group came out in support of Aisha after the controversy stating that the cultural community in Lakshadweep stands firm with the activist and that it is incorrect to portray Aisha's statement as treasonous. Recently, leaders from the opposition parties had come together to submit a complaint against Patel with President Ram Nath Kovind. A series of administrative decisions and policy changes by the administrator created a stir in the union territory as local people are allegedly against these changes. The demand to recall the administrator is gaining steam.
