Farooq Abdullah's Sister, Daughter detained during protest in Srinagar over Art 370 move

Srinagar: Former Chief Minister and chairman of Jammu & Kashmir National Conference, Farooq Abdullah's sister Suraiya and daughter Safiya detained during a protest against abrogation of  Article370 in Srinagar on Tuesday.

The police detained half a dozen women activists, including the sister and daughter of Farooq Abdullah during the protest.

Wearing black armbands and holding placards, the women protestors were not allowed by the police personnel to assemble and were asked to disperse peacefully. However, the protesters refused to disperse and tried to stage a sit-in.

The women CRPF personnel rounded the protestors into police vehicles. The police also tried to stop the protesting women from distributing a statement to the media covering the protest.

Several political leaders of the state, including former chief ministers Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah, as well as Mehbooba Mufti, have been placed under detention since August as the government announced its move to end special status granted to the state under the Article 370 of the constitution and split it into two union territories.

Farooq Abdullah, 83, has been charged under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA), which enables detention without trial for three to six months.

Criticising the detention, former CM and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said, "Curfew can be placed on a city but certainty not on feelings & thoughts."
