Assam: Akhil Gogoi, who has been lodged in jail since December 2019, through his counsel approached the court to grant permission to meet his family and the people of the constituency who had elected him in the recently held elections. The court, however, granted him permission to meet only his family members instead of the people in his constituency.
Soon after the parole was granted for 48 hours, a team of Assam police escorted Gogoi from the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) to his home in the Chandmari area in Guwahati. Gogoi met his wife, son and other relatives. Gogoi had left today morning for Chelenghat village in Jorhat district to meet his ailing mother Priyada Gogoi. A team of Assam Police also accompanied Gogoi.

Gogoi was arrested by the Assam police for his alleged involvement in the violent protests against CAA in December 2019. Later the case was handed over to the National Investigating Agency (NIA). Although Akhil Gogoi was recently discharged from one of the NIA cases, trial and hearing for one more case under the NIA is still on. Along with Akhil Gogoi, the court had discharged two others including Bhupen Gogoi and Jagjit Gohain from the case. In December 2019 the Chabua police station registered a case against Akhil Gogoi and several others for allegedly assaulting a police officer on duty and for hurling stones at the cops. Gogoi was booked under UAPA and the case was later handed over to the NIA.
