Delhi LG grants detaining power under NSA to Police Chief

Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) Anil Baijal has granted the Delhi Police Commissioner till 18th October the authority to detain any individual, under the National Security Act (NSA). A gazette notification in this regard had been issued on Friday.

New Delhi: Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal has granted the Delhi Police chief Balaji Srivastav the power to apprehend anyone under the National Security Act (NSA) till 18th October 2021. A gazette notification in this regard had been issued on Friday. It is known that the National Security Act allows preventive detention of an individual for months, if the authorities feel that the individual is a threat to the national security, law and order.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (3) of section 3, read with clause (e) of Section 2 of the National Security Act, 1980, the Lt Governor pleased to direct that during the period July 19 to October 18, the Delhi Police Commissioner may also exercise the powers of detaining authority under sub-section (2) of the section 3 of the aforesaid Act," the notification stated.

The development assumes significance as it comes ahead of Independence Day and at a time when the farmers are protesting against the Centre's contentious farms laws, and are organizing the 'Farmer Parliament' at the Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Recently, intel inputs have been received by Delhi Police that Pakistan-sponsored terrorists can carry out major terror strikes in the national capital including drone strikes.

Reacting to the intelligence input, Delhi Police Commissioner Balaji Srivastava had issued orders banning all flying objects including all kinds of drones, paragliders and hot air balloons. Instructed have also been given to all district DCPs to patrol their respective areas. The orders shall remain in force in the national capital for a period of 32 days from July 16 till August 16 for security reasons, officials had said.
