New Delhi: 1152 private/compartment students of class 10th and 12th who are to appear for exams have challenged the CBSE formula which was cleared by the Apex Court for the Class XII board exams. The students filed a petition in the SC questioning the evaluation policy, apart from putting forward their suggestions. The students had filed their petition demanding that a policy is made for compartment/private, correspondence and drop out students. They also pleaded before the court that they are given equal treatment and that their results also be published in a time-bound manner. In case they are not satisfied with their results, CBSE should address their grievances, the students added.

They contend in their petition that "owing to the prevailing Covid 19 pandemic situation in the country it is not advisable to conduct physical mode of examination for the private/2nd chance compartment candidates, as it would endanger their lives and would expose them to an environment that may not be safe". Students have also prayed for directions to CBSE to allow the private, compartment and repeater students to file their objections within a reasonable period of time in case they are not satisfied. The plea is likely to be heard on 21st June when the court will hear pleas pertaining to CBSE, ICSE and state boards examination.

Earlier, on June 17 the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Thursday informed the Supreme Court that a 30:30:40 formula has been considered for evaluation and that the results would be out by July 31. CBSE added that the marks will be based on unit test/mid-term/pre-board exam and 40 per cent weightage will be given. Attorney General for India KK Venugopal, appearing for the CBSE had told the Supreme court that a proper policy has been put into place to evaluate the students. The evaluation criteria will be made available soon and a 13 member committee was constituted to come up with the evaluation criteria on the basis of which the final marks would be decided.

"The total marks awarded should be in consonance with the past performance of the school in Class 12 Board Examinations. The computation of theory marks for Class 12 will be based on performance in one or more Unit Test(s), Mid-Term, Pre-Board(s) theory examination. The result committee of the school may decide the weightage to be given to each exam based on the credibility and reliability of the assessment. For example, if the committee may be of the considered view that only the Pre-Board exams may be taken into consideration, then a full weightage can be given to that component. Similarly, another school Result committee may decide to give equal weightage to Pre-Board exams and Mid-Term exams," the CBSE affidavit had mentioned.
