TC not mandatory for admissions to govt schools in Tamil Nadu

Transfer Certificate which is mandatory for students to gain admission into new schools is not required henceforth in Tamil Nadu, says a senior official from the School Education Department. Government and aided schools witnessed a drastic increase in admissions, with parents having incurred job losses and other financial troubles due to the pandemic.

Following the Coronavirus pandemic, government and aided schools witnessed a drastic increase in admissions, with parents having incurred job losses and other financial troubles.

Earlier, TC was required to get admission to government elementary and middle school level, however, following complaints by parents, now TC is not mandatory for students in high school level joining state-run institutions, the Education Department official said, adding only Aadhaar number is required for the students who seek admissions. He also added that the details of the students and their Aadhaar numbers could be accessed using Educational Management Information System (EMIS), a common online platform that connects schools, teachers and students.

According to the president of Tamil Nadu Teachers Association, many parents in Tamil nadu have complained saying that private schools were refusing to provide Transfer Certificates unless all dues were cleared and that they fear losing out students. It is known that private schools in Tamil Nadu have not been operating since March 24, 2020 due to corona pandemic. In this regard, the District Education officials mull taking strict action against those private schools that refrain from providing TCs to students.

The primary objective of a transfer certificate is to release the student from the current school so that he/she can join another institution. Without a valid Transfer Certificate, no student will be able to join another school, college or institute.
