Agra (Uttar Pradesh): A 4-year-old boy was rescued following an eight-hour operation after he fell into a 150-feet-deep borewell at around 7:30 am while playing in Dhariyai village here on Monday. District Magistrate, Agra Prabhu N Singh said that the boy's health condition is being monitored by a team of doctors. According to Agra Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Muniraj G, it was due to the joint efforts of the Army, SDRF, NDRF and Civil Police, that the boy was safely rescued following an operation that lasted from 8.30 am to 4.55 pm. He added that the borewell is located in the land belonging to the child's family.

The borewell has been there for some six-seven years now but was opened temporarily as the family had started making a new borewell just a couple of days ago, the district police chief said. The child accidentally fell into the borewell while playing at around 7.30 am and was stuck at around 90-feet, officials said. The boy's father, Chhotelal, expressed his gratitude, saying, "I'm very fortunate to see my child again. I thank everyone who has put their efforts to save my son."

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Monday appealed to state governments and district authorities to "strictly regulate" open borewells in their areas and punish those who flout the rules and endanger innocent lives. NDRF Director General S N Pradhan said this on his official Twitter handle after a 4-year-old boy, who got stuck in a 150-ft deep borewell in Agra, was rescued after an about eight-hour-long operation by rescuers from multiple agencies, including the central contingency force, the Uttar Pradesh state disaster response force and the Army.

The DG said he appeals to all state governments, district and local administration to strictly regulate all open borewells and punish those who flout rules and endanger innocent lives. He added that even the relatives of the victims should not be spared if they are found guilty of leaving the borewells uncovered or unattended. "During the rescue process, oxygen and some food items were provided to the child with the help of pipeline and rope. A camera was also lowered into the hole for constant monitoring of the child. Finally, he was rescued at 4:55 pm," an NDRF spokesperson said.
