Some employees of Air India have succumbed to COVID-19, an official circular of the airline has said, as it announced a fixed compensation amount for the next of kin.

New Delhi: Air India on Monday decided to pay compensation ranging from Rs 90,000 to Rs 10 lakh to kin of its employees who succumb to Covid-19.

As per the letter, accessed by ETV Bharat, permanent employee's kin will receive Rs 10 lakh, fixed term contract employees engaged directly by the airline will be paid Rs 5 lakh and the casual employees who worked for upto a year will get compensation with Rs Rs 90,000 if they lose their life due to coronavirus.

If the deceased worker was employed through a contractor or service provider, his or her family or legal heir will be paid an amount equivalent to the gross salary of two months.

"In view of the prevalent Covid-19 pandemic, many employees of the company are getting COVID positive and some of the employees have also succumbed to this pandemic," an internal letter to regional directors of all the four regions read.

"In view of the above to safeguard the interests of the families, it has been decided to make an Ad-hoc payment to the family legal heir of employees, who die during the period of COVID-19," the letter further stated.

The letter also clarified that the ad-hoc payment will be applicable only for the period of the pandemic (COVID-19) and shall be initially in force from 1 April, 2020 to 31 March, 2021.

As per the sources, more than 10 Air India employees succumbed to the the coronavirus pandemic and 200 other staff tested positive for Covid-19 till date.

Pilot unions had on Friday stated that coronavirus pandemic has infected 55 of its cockpit crew members.

Air India spokesperson was not available to comment on the issue.

In a recent order to its employees, Air India had said that 'Work from Home' option can be considered for employees who are at higher risk due to medical conditions, pregnant women and employees in containment zones.
