Mumbai: Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani has unveiled the company’s plan to launch an ultra-affordable 4G phone in the country in partnership with global technology giant Google. Addressing the RIL’s shareholders virtually during the 44th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Thursday, Ambani said, the JioPhone Next will be launched on next Ganesh Chaturthi (September 10).

“JioPhone Next is powered by an extremely optimized version of the ANDROID operating system. It has been jointly developed by JIO and Google, especially for the Indian market,” Ambani told shareholders. Ambani further said that JioPhone Next will also be launched outside India. It will be the most affordable smartphone not only in India but also across the world, the Reliance Chairman said.

“This is a testimony to a global technology giant and a national technology champion working jointly to make a break-through product... that can be first introduced in India… and then taken to the rest of the world,” he added. Among other features, the JioPhone Next will have a voice assistant, smart camera with augmented reality filters and the facilities like automatic read-aloud of screen text and language translation.

During the 43rd AGM last July, Ambani announced that Google and Jio are partnering to build an Android-based smartphone operating system. Earlier, Google has agreed to invest Rs 33,737 crore for a 7.7 per cent stake in Reliance Industries' technology venture and to cooperate on technology initiatives, including development of affordable smartphones.
