Solapur/Hyderabad:Prices of onions continues to rise in markets across the country. India’s kitchen staple touched Rs 200/kg in retail counters in metros like Kolkata, Solapur and Chennai on Thursday.

Onion prices touched Rs 200/kg

As per reports the prices were up by over 150% at retail counters in the last ten days. And, more alarmingly, the similar trend is seen in wholesale markets too.

Situation in Other Cities

In Hyderabad

Onion prices have touched Rs 150 kg in the city. The highest rate in markets for onions stands at Rs 15,000 per 100 kilograms and the lowest at Rs 6,000.

Madurai, Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu is one of the major consuming States. The good quality onions, especially small onions that are used in sambar, are being sold at Rs 180 per kg and the second quality onions are available at Rs 120-130 per kg.

Similar trend could be seen in Koyambedu market in Chennai. As per the reports available good quality onions touched Rs 180/kg.

Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh is one of the major producing States in the country. In Kurnool market, onion prices touched a new record. The rate on Thursday reached Rs 13,160 per quintal which translates to around Rs 132/kg. Traders said prices have jumped by nearly Rs 300 per quintal in a single day.

As the shipments of onion imports from Afghanistan, Turkey and Egypt would take three weeks at least, there seems to be no respite for Aam Admi.
